Adverse reactions to gentamicin
KC Singhal, Verma Kamini, Kumar Pramod, RS Bhatia
January-March 1991, 23(1):64-68
1. Adverse drug reactions (ADR) following gentamicin administration were studied. 2. The ADR profile obtained was nephrotoxicity (3 46%), ototoxicity (5 49%), pruritic skin rash (0.99%) and psychotic reaction (0.49%) The overall incidence of ADR being 8.41%. 3. An attempt was made to identify the risk factors predisposing to the development of renal toxicity due to gentamicin.Apparent higher incidences were obtained in male patients in ages over 50 years, with duration of therapy of 10 days or more, with simultaneous use of cephalosporins and with pre-existing hypovolemia and hypotension. Only advanced age (over 50 years) was found to be statistically significant.
