Anti-ulcer drugs from indigenous sources with emphasis on Musa sapientum, Tamrabhasma, Asparagus racemosus and Zingiber officinale

1. Scoparone produced a rapid and sustained fall of blood pressure in anaesthetized normotensive and experimental hypertensive animals and conscious normotensive rats. The effect was dose related, appeared immediately after i.v. and within I5-20 min after p.o. administration and lasted for 2-5 h. 2. The hypertensive animals were more sensitive to the effect of scoparone than normotensive. 3. The antihypertensive effect of scoparone appears to be the results of both the central as well as peripheral actions.

1. In the present study it has been shown that acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) produces hemolysis of both normal and G-6-PD deficient erythrocytes. 2. The degree of hemolysis is almost the same in both the erythrocytes. 3. Acetylation and peroxidation of membrane lipid do not appear to be necessary for the hemolytic effect of ASA. 4. Severe membrane damage as evident from the liberation of phospholipids and sterols appears to be the mechanism by which ASA produces hemolysis.

1. Penbutolol, a new, centrally-active (-blocking agent has been studied for its interaction with alcohol. 2. Alcohol (75(proof whisky) as 0.8 mg/kg was administered with 20 mg. penbutolol or placebo in double-blind crossover to 6 volunteers. 3. Psychomotor tests of performance did not reveal any significant penbutolol-alcohol interaction. 4. Peak changes in psychomotor performance coincided under both treatment conditions with peak serum alcohol levels.
