Chloroform extracts of stem and root of Punica granatum and Artrmisia siversiana, used in ancient Indian Medicine as anthehnintics, were investigated for any activity.against Syphacia obvelata, Nippostrongylus brasiliense and Hymenolepis nana in vivo. Both extracts were able to eliminate H.nana from mice. Their potency was less as compared to Quinacrine. It is suggested that these drugs should be tried for tapeworm infestations in man and domestic animals.

1. The biochemical and haematological effects of tolmetin (a pyrole acetic acid derivative), on blood sugar,' serum cholesterol, serum uric acid, blood count, coagulation time, plasma fibrinogen content and euglobin clot lysis time (ELT) were studied in albino rabbits
2. Tolmetin (10 mg/kg), (P.O.) produced marked and significant hypoglycaemic, hypocholesterolaemic and hypouricaemic effects which started after one hour with a peak effect at two hours without complete recovery even upto four hours.
3. It decreased coagulation time and platelet count but increased plasma fibrinogen level and ELT.

Seventeen antihistamines were studied far their effect on acetylcholine (Ach) Induced contraction of skeletal muscle (Skm) under Gaddum's superfusion technique. All drugs exhibit some degree of cuare like action In 0.1 to 10 mcg dose except in pheniramine, mabhydroline and metiamide where there was a regression of curarimimetic effect with increasing doses. During recovery from drug effect the tissue showed an increased sensitivity to the action of Ach. In some instances this potentiation was immediate. In high doses (100 mcg and above). some of the antihistamines produced contracture of Skm which was not blocked by curare.

1. A clinical trial has been carried out in ten patients with cerebellar ataxia of varying etiology to assess the effectiveness of oral choline chloride and lithium carbonate individually or in combination.
2.The parameters for assessment of improvement included the intensity of tremor, the distance of overshoot from fixed point 'during coordination tests, degree of nystagmus, maximum interpedal distance without ataxia with eyes open, gait and hand-writing charts.
3. The symptoms and signs of cerebellar disease showed partial improvement with administration of choline chloride which were markedly ameliorated by concurrent administration of lithium carbonate.

Pharmacokinetics of H2-antagonists during propofol or thiopentone anaesthesia in rats |

Objective: To investigate the direct and the indirect effects of flt3 ligand (FL) on hematopoiesis.
Methods: Mononuclear cells from human cord blood were plated in methylcellulose medium containing different cytokines for inducing hematopoietic colony formation. Dendritic cells were induced from the mononuclear cells with a cytokine cocktail with or without recombinant human soluble FL (rhFL; 100ng/ ml). The flt3 receptors on the surface of a human microvascular endothelial cell line (ECV) were analyzed by flow cytometry. The proliferation of ECV stimulated by FL was measured with the microculture tetrazolium assay. We also measured the level of FL in the supernatant of ECV cultures.
Results: RhFL stimulates colony formation from cord blood when used as sole stimulant. FL in combination with other cytokines increased colony formation significantly. The number of DC was approximately 2.5 times higher when rhFL was used. RhFL stimulates the proliferation of ECV on which flt3 receptors is expressed. Furthermore, ECV secretes FL and this effect is augmented by tumor necrosis factor-?(?(TNF( ) and reduced by glucocorticoid.
Conclusions: FL enhances hematopoietic colony formation and DC proliferation from human cord blood cells. FL not only stimulates the proliferation of ECV, but it is also secreted by ECV. It appears that FL may act as an autocrine growth cytokine of endothelial cells.
