Pharmacology and biochemical evaluation of Tridax procumbens on inflammation  |

1. Tridax procumbens (T. P.) was evaluated on various inflammatory models in rats and mice.
2. T. P. has significantly reduced exudate volume leucocyte migration, edema fluid, grannuloma tissue and
(-glutamyl transpeptidase, indicates good anti-inflammatory action.
3. T. P. has negligible ulcerogenic property in comparison with NSAIAS.
4. T. P. causes anti-inflammatory activity through inhibiting SRs and PGs.

Potential antifilarial activity of Streblus asper against Setaria cervi (nematoda: filarioidea) |

The effect of aqueous and alcoholic extract of Streblus asper was studied on the spontaneous movements of the whole worm and nerve-muscle preparation of Setaria cervi and on the survival of microfilariae in vitro. Aqueous as well as alcoholic extract caused inhibition of spontaneous motility of the whole worm and the nerve-muscle preparation of S cervi characterized by decreased tone, amplitude and rate of contractions. The concentration required to inhibit the movements of the nerve-muscle preparation was l/25 for aqueous and l/160 for alcoholic extract suggesting a cuticular permeability barrrier. The stimulatory response of acetylcholine was blocked by alcoholic and not by aqueous extract of S asper. Both alcoholic as well as aqueous extracts caused death of microfilariae in vitro, LC50 and LC90 being 90 and 33.5 ng/ml, respectively.

Mechanism of acute pressor response to cadmium chloride |

1. In rats, acute iv administration of CdCl2 (0.5 and 1 mg/kg) produced a depressor response followed by a pressor response while the acute i p administration of CdCI2 (0.5 and 1 mg/kg) produced only a pressor response.
2. Hexamethonium (10 mg/kg, i v), phentolamine (5 mg/kg, i v), propranolol (2 mg/kg, i v) or indomethacin (20 mg/kg, i p) did not modify the acute pressor response to CdCl2 (i v or i p).
3. Acute reserpinisation, bilateral adrenalectomy or chemical sympathectomy by guanethidine did not modify the acute pressor response to CdCI2 (i v or i p).
4. Verapamil(0.5, 1 and 2 mg/kg, i v) or nifedipine (0.25 and 0.5 mg/kg, i v) prevented the acute pressor response to CdCl2 (i v or i p).
5. It is concluded that cadmium might mimic calcium ion and produce a direct contractile effect on the vascular smooth muscle.

A note on neuropsychopharmacological studies of Melia azedarach leaves |

1. Melia azedarach leaf extract potentiated pentobarbitone induced hypnosis in mice, lowered activity in the open field, decreased conditioned avoidance response and Techno wheel activity in rats, thus indicating a CNS depressant property.
2. It showed analgesic action as seen by the hot plate and also the acetic acid induced writhing method.
3 . It potentiated haloperidol induced catatonia, reduced the immobility of rats enhanced exploratory activity but like other CNS depressants (e.g. phenobarbitone) it reduced seizures.
4. It did not provide any protection against amphetamine toxicity in aggregated mice.
