The biochemical pharmacology of the brain : A capsule review and comments |
p. 1 |
B Mukerji
Preliminary screening of 8 chemicals was done for antifungal action in vitro against Trichophyton verrucosum, Tricho-phyton mentagrophytes and Trlchophyton simil Griseofulvin. Thiabendazole and organic chlorinated hydrocarbon (Sulfenimide) exhibited uniform antifungal action against all the three test dermatophytes. Chemicals like copper oxychloride, micronised wettable sulphur and kasumin (antibiotic) showed antifungal activity against T. simii in preliminary screening. KOH 0.5% and Formalin 0.5% did not show any antifungal activity against the test dermatophytes. On further study the M.I.C. and M.L.C. of Thiabendarole as fungistatic and fungicidal was 0.312 and 1.25 mg/ml respectively. Similarly in case of Sulfenimide the fungicidal action was present at 0.95% mg/ml.

Importance of plasma serotonin in intestinal obstruction |
p. 11 |
CN Prasad, SK Roy, PK Debnath, AK Sanyal
The role and importance of Serotonin in intestinal obstruction has been evaluated by studying 40 cases of intestinal obstruction of varying etiology. The plasma level of Serotonin had been significantly higher in acute mechanical obstructions particularly when small bowel is obstructed primarily: the fall in the plasma level, following relief of obstructions, too were also significant. Chronic intestinal obstruction of mechanical type and obstruction due to adynamic ileus did not reveal any significant difference from the control both preoperative and postoperatively. In the acute mechanical obstructions the levels were significantly higher in closed loop variety and also when the obstruction is complicated with ischaemic changes. However, the motility seems to be of Iesser importance in mechanical obstruction as the plasma Serotonin level were comparable irrespective of the presence of increased and diminished or absent bowel sounds. But the latter (acute mechanical obstruction with diminished or absent bowel sounds) had revealed significantly higher plasma level than in adynamic ileus. A clinical applicability and its relevance to differentiate between late cases of mechanical obstructions with absent bowel sounds and a true adynamic ileus has been emphasised.

Influence of electroshocks on carrageenan induced paw oedema in rats |
p. 17 |
NK Khanna, BR Madan
Electroshock seizures produced a significant inhibition of carrageenan-induced paw oedema in the rat. It has been suggested that in the mediation of this action tryptophan may be involved. The possible role of adrenergic system has been excluded by the observation that the anti-inflammatory response to electroshocks remains unaltered in rats pretreated with reserpine.

Long term suppression of gastric acid secretion by diamox in dogs |
p. 21 |
PS Shetty, P Zachariah
Administration of diamox results in reduction in volume and acid content of histamine-induced gastric secretion in anaesthetised dogs. The effects of inhibition of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase in actively secreting gastric mucosa are not only immediate. But prolonged as seen in subsequent follow up studies for 20 weeks which shows a decrease in acid secreting capacity of stomach in response to histamine.
