Synthesis of some new N3-substituted hydantions as potential anticonvulsant agents

1. Fifteen different substituted hydantoin derivatives were prepared by condensation of different chloro-acetylated heterocyclic moieties with alkali metal-cyanate in presence of quaternary ammonium salt. The reaction was found to proceed best in polar solvents. 2. The compounds were screened for anticonvulsant activity. Diphenyl hydantoin sodium was used as the reference drug. 3. Three of the compounds showed significant anticonvulsant activity. Compound XII, N3-(5-(p-dimethyl-amino-phenyl)-1,3,4,-oxadiazol-2 yl) hydantoin exhibited a potent anticonvulsant activity.
