1. Aqueous extract of canavalia virosa (CV) was evaluated for its pharmacological effects in various experimental animals. 2. The extract produced a number of CNS effects including potentiation of pentobarbitone hypnosis in mice at (1 mg 100g); potentiation of morphine catalepsy in albino rats (1 mg/100g) C.V. did not have any behavioural effects in terms of its effects on rota-rod test or exploratory behaviour in mice. 3. C.V. markedly degranulated mesenteric mast leading to liberation of histamine which may possibly be responsible for hypotension and gestrointestinal symptoms seen in poisoning due to ingestion of seeds of C.V.
