Studies on the indirect sympathomimetic effects of nitroxazepine on the rat anococcygeus muscle

1. Nitroxazepine (2.6 X IO-8M) produced leftward shift of dose responses curve of noradrenaline (5.9 X IO-7 M to 1.7 X 10-4M) and also produced time dependent potentiation to noradrenaline (5.9 X IO-7 M) threshold response.
2. Nialamide (1.6 X l0-5 M) pyrogallol (2.3 X IO-5M) and desipmmine (1.8 X 10-5 M) produced potentiation of the threshold responses to noradrenaline. In the presence of nialamide and pyrogallol, nitroxazepine further potentiated the responses to noradrenaline. However in the presence of desipramine, no further potentiation by nitoxazepine was observed.
3. The responses to methoxamine (4.0 X l0-7 to 1.2 X I0-5M) were not affected by nitroxazepine. A sympathomimetic effect of nitroxazepine involving inhibition of noradrenaline uptake is suggested on the basis of data obtained.
