Action of organophosphorus compound (cythioate) on acetylcholine content and cholinesterase activity of rat brain

Cythioate, a systemic organophosphorus compound has progressively increased the acetylcholine (ACh) content (16.54 to 118.04%) and decreased the cholinesterase (ChE) activity (23.0 to 98.4%) of rat brain with 3 to 100 mg/kg doses given by i.p. route. Atropine protected the rats from the toxic effects of cythioate by blocking the action of ACh at the receptors without affecting Ach content and ChE activity.
