Dr Shiv Shankar Gupta was born in an illustrious family of Babu Gulab Rai M.A., a well known Hindi writer. He passed MBBS in 1948 and MD (Pharmacology) in 1954 from Agra Medical College, Agra.

He worked on various posts in Medical College at Agra and Indore. He also established and developed the department of Pharmacology at Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal. Due to his keen interest and dedication in research, he was appointed as Head of the Department of Pharmacology in 1957.

He had advanced research training in the field of neuro and autoimmune Pharmacology at Columbia University, Vancouver, Manitoba University Winnipeg, Mc Gill University, Montreal Canada and National Research Institute, London (UK).

He was one of the pioneers in the field of experimental Pharmacology in India and demonstrated the basis for the use of Ayurvedic medicines. For example he published anti-inflammatory effect of Curcuma longa (Haldi), which helped the Central Council of research in Ayurveda and Siddha claim the "Patent right" by India. Further, he was rewarded by Central Council of Research for Indian Medicines for his work on inhibition of Slow Reacting Substances (SRS-A) of anaphylaxis by Gardenia turgida. He published 88 original papers in national and international journals.

Professor Gupta was one of the active members of Association of Physiologist and Pharmacologists of India and played a key role in the Indian Pharmacological Society. Beside this he contributed to the development of medical education and Pharmacy Council of India. He had been the mentor to many MD and PhD students in pharmacology.

He held the responsible and prestigious post of Dean and Principal of medical colleges of Madhya Pradesh. On his superannuation he was appointed advisor to Madhya Pradesh Council of Science and Technology.
