The Organizing Committee has great pleasure in welcoming the 1400 delegates, resource persons, and eminent pharmacologists from all over the globe coming to Manipal to participate in the 44 th Annual Conference of Indian Pharmacological Society (IPS). The Department of Pharmacology, Kasturba Medical College Manipal is organizing the conference, which will be held from 19 th to 21 st December 2011. The theme of the conference is - Challenges Ahead In Translational Pharmacology. This is the first time the department is hosting the national conference of Indian Pharmacological Society.

Besides the delegates, more than 100 resource persons from India and many from abroad are expected to actively participate in the scientific sessions of the conference. There will be presentations for Prize (50) Oral (130) and Poster (545) sessions. In addition there will be orations (5), symposia (9), plenary lectures (9) and Quiz is being organized.

The conference will be inaugurated by Dr. Vishwa Mohan Katoch, Secretary, Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India & Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi.

Emergence of resistance to antimicrobials is a serious issue worldwide. The WHO has its theme, Combating Antimicrobial Resistance. Keeping the importance of the issue, it is decided to have this theme for the first symposium of the conference. Eminent scientists from WHO and other key contributors will take part in deliberations. In addition, there are symposia on management of depression, newer anticancer drugs, rational use of drugs in developing countries, perspectives and challenges in early clinical development, substance abuse in HIV associated immune function and neurotoxicity, stem cell therapy and Biosimilars. It is hoped that these symposia will draw the attention of the delegates and experts and they will attend in large numbers.

Apart from the above, there will be five pre-conference workshops, namely, Pharmacovigilance, Medical Writing, Research Methodology, Problem Based Learning and Biostatistics and Bioethics. These workshops have been specially arranged for the benefit of young faculty members and postgraduate students.
