Effect of Piper betle Linn (Stalk) extract on male rat fertility

1. Chronic oral administration of the crude alcoholic extract of the stalk of the leaf of Piper betle Linn. showed antifertility effect. This was manifested by the antiandrogenic action in male rats.
2. Noticeable decrease in relative organ weights with 0-33% fertility rate, reduced sperm count and sluggish motility at doses of 1.25 and 1.5 g/kg daily for 30 consecutive days were recorded.
3. Significant increase (P<0.0l) in cholesterol (adrenal and testis) was an important manifestation.
4. It could be concluded that the plausible cause of infertility in male rats was due to inhibition of steroidogenesis.
