. 2'- (6- Sulphonyl- 6H- 7- methyl- S-oXo- 4H- 2,3- dihydro-1, 4- diazepino)-2, 5- dimethyl-6, 7- benzomorphan (I) was obtained in three steps (i) chlorosulphonation of 2, 5-dimethyl-6, 7-benzomorphan (Ia) to 2' chlorosulphonyl-2, 5-dimethyl-6, 7-benzomorphan (Ib) (ii) followed with the candensotion of Ib with the sodium salt of ethylacetoacetate giving an intermediate Ic with (iii) subsequent reaction of Ic with ethylenediamine. It was found to possess low toxicity, significant antidepressant and analgesic activities.
